How to choose a baby name
Start with names you like saying. Build a small shortlist, test each name with the surname, and check any meaning or cultural connection that matters to you. You do not need to agree on every suggestion — just find a few worth considering together.
Choose a direction, not a winner
Write down what appeals to you: classic names, short names, nature-inspired names or a particular language. Each person choosing the name can make a separate list before comparing notes. Look for shared preferences as well as shared names.
If your lists differ, pick one preference from each. You might explore short names with a family connection, or classic names with a less familiar nickname. Use those details in the baby name generator to build a shortlist.
Say the whole name out loud
Try the first name, any middle names and the surname together. Say them at a normal pace, then try the first name on its own. Notice whether the sounds run together or the rhythm feels awkward to you.
- Write the full initials and check what they spell.
- Try likely nicknames alongside the surname.
- Say the name in the languages your family uses.
- Consider whether you are comfortable explaining the spelling or pronunciation.
These are personal preferences, not rules that make one name better than another.
Make room for family and heritage
A relative’s name, a language you speak or a cultural connection can help narrow your choices. Decide whether you want an exact family name, a related spelling or a middle name that carries the connection.
If you are considering a name from a language or tradition you do not know well, ask someone familiar with it about pronunciation and context. Do not assume similar spellings have the same meaning.
Check meanings before relying on them
Treat a suggested meaning as something to check, not a guarantee. Consult a reputable naming reference or language dictionary, and compare sources when an explanation matters to your decision. Our generator does not verify meanings, origins or popularity rankings.
Keep the exact spelling in your notes. If sources disagree, leave the meaning uncertain rather than choosing the explanation you prefer.
Compare a shortlist together
Sort your options into “yes”, “maybe” and “no”. Discuss what you like about the maybes: the sound, a connection, the length or a nickname. This can reveal a shared direction even when your favourite names differ.
Try the shortlist again after a break. Use each name in an everyday sentence and write it down. You can save favourites in this browser and share the shortlist without an account. A free account lets you generate more and keep favourites across devices.
A final shortlist check
- Do we like saying the name on its own and with the surname?
- Are we comfortable with its initials, spelling and possible nicknames?
- Have we checked any meaning or heritage connection we are relying on?
- Does everyone choosing the name have an option they genuinely like?
If you plan to register the name, check the rules with the relevant local registration authority. The generator offers ideas, not registration advice.
